850 vs 240 850

For crashtest results:

For US insurance injury claims:

http://www.carsafety.org/vehicle_ratings/ictl/ictl.htm

1995-1998 data on 9xx/SV90 RWD Volvos is available in an older study in a pdf file linked at the bottom of that page.

There is also a "Driver Death Rate" study available on their website, it includes the 850-70 but I don't think they have a study available on the website that includes the old 240 Volvos.

They do have the 240 data, somewhere. You could always call and ask.

For reliability:

If you're in the US you could go to your local public library and find the April issue of Consumer Reports, the most current 2002 issue and an April issue from say, 10 years ago. It may be on microfilm or CD but they should have access to it. Look at the "Frequency of Repair" charts, and the interpretation key at the beginning of the charts, it changed a couple of years ago.

Good luck!
