Please stay clear of the newer models (front wheel or all wheel drive).
I own a 1998 V70 T5 automatic (101,250 km / 62,281 miles) and my list of repairs last year (2003) follows:
ABS Unit
Engine mounting
Strut mountings
Replaced front discs / rotors
Replaced left lower ball joint (I replaced the right side also, just in case)
Ignition Lock
The car is now (2 August 2004) in the workshop for the following:
Left rear lock repair
Right front door stay spot welding failed (design fault)
I bought the car new and thought that it would serve me into retirement.
My wife drives a 1988 240 wagon. What a joy! (the car)
Think of especially the V70 T5 as a domesticated GoKart. Stay with the 240 models, probably the best Volvo cars built, except of course for my 122S.
