When should you replace the water hoses on an 850?' 850 1996

Yep, I would certainly replace them now. What most people don't realize is that cooling system hoses tend to deteriorate from the inside out. Hoses that look OK on the outside can actually be swollen and spongy on the inside, and theres no real easy way to detect that. You can squeeze them and see if they feel spongy but that's not always easy to do, especially on the hard to reach hoses.

For what it costs for a set, I'm planning on replacing mine soon. Back in the day when motors where built of cast iron, an overheat was no big deal. Today, with aluminum blocks and heads, an overheat can ruin a motor. I'd hate to have to spend a couple grand on a new motor because I didn't spend a few bucks on some new hoses.
