Thanks for the tip Bob. To follow up, I restored the hood to its proper position - didn't like the misalignment, even though probably I would be the only person to notice it. Then I screwed a small 1/2" tall or so rubber bumper thingy to the plastic shroud just in front of the right side hood latch, and it works perfectly now - hood is releasing properly first time lever is pulled.
