Hi Rich;
I have a Swedish repair book for the 240 cars, published by Volvo, where they actually state with picture and text that the front crossmember is a suitable lifting point. They also refer to "the rear axle" but not specifically the pumpkin.
Personally I occasionally lift the car by the crossmember. I did put the garage jack under the pumpkin once. Never, never again. Explanation and gory details to be found here:
