RPMs shot up and then she died..... 200 1990

This seems to be a common symptom not only with Volvos, but with a lot of other cars when the camshaft position sensor (located in the distributor) is failing. Usually people seem to describe the initial symptom as something going crazy with the tach needle.

It could also be the ignition power stage amplifier. I had the exact same thing happen in a Dodge Caravan. It would start and run fine, but die at unexpected times, then start right up again. Replaced the PSA and never had another problem.
