But on this car, I believe that the crank position sensor is on top of the bell housing, between the engine block and the firewall, in a rather tight location.
If you can see it (with a mirror) and the insulation is flaking off the wire to the sensor, it has failed and must be replaced.
That lead carries a very weak electrical signal. When the shielding around the wire fails, it starts picking up electrical interference. Ultimately, the wire shorts out against the block and then the car stops altogether.
