960 window lift bar 900

used the faq's last night to navigate through rt rear passenger door and window regulator.

The window had come out of it's lift bar. It was in the closed position thankfully. The lift bar was still attached securely to regulator but the hard rubber strip that the window sits in is old and cracking. So it lost it's grip on the bottom of the window at some time. So apparently when my son sitting back there went to roll down the window the lift bar separated from the window.

Question is...where do I find this hard rubber channel that the window fits in or should I use existing one and just squirt some adhesive in there?

Dear p700walk,

May this find you well. According to Volvo VADIS (the now-superseded dealer parts and service database) the item you need is Part #1268231. It is called a "filler strip". It should cost about $20 at a Volvo dealer. It may come as a single length, which you'll have to cut.

As the glass compresses this "filler strip", when the glass is seated into the "lift rail" (the metal pieces, that link the glass to the lift arms), great care will be needed when emplacing the glass.

You may be able to re-seat the glass into the "lift rail", by hand pressure on it. If this does not work, I'd try to "tap" on the glass. It is tempered. Such glass can shatter, when struck on an edge.

Rather, I'd go to an auto glass repair shop, and let them do it. A replacement window is about $115.00 (dealer price).

Finally, you could use silicone, to re-bed the glass. Clean the glass with rubbing alcohol and clean the rubber strip, as well.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

an update. I went to auto glass shop and they said instead of placing the window into this filler strip (volvo part) that resides in metal lift bar channel, they use a glue in the channel and press window in.

They do this with glass in door so they can get it all lined up then come from beneath with the lifter bar and press up.

Got them down to 65.00 from 85 for work because I told them my door is all apart and they won't have to do any reinstallation of door panel.

Dear p700walk,

May this find you well. If the installer will give you a year guarantee, I don't see why an adhesive shouldn't work as well as a filler strip. If the adhesive fails, it can be removed, and a filler strip used.

Adhesives are used to assemble airplane fuselages. This auto use is not high stress, except when the window is going down. There's some drag on it from the sealing strips. Once the adhesive cures, though, it should be very strong.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

hey spook thanks,
my window is in good shape with a nice tint on it so I'll be very ginger in my handling.

It's in place rt now rolled up and is sitting in the lift rail, which is then wired into door to keep it from falling down as I have the regulator removed from car to clean and lube.

good advice, I think I'll take window out with lift rail in hand and take to glass place and have them seat the glass for me.

should i go with rivets like factory or replace with bolts. Bolt option that has been talked about might be tough with securing nuts other side.

Dear p700walk,

May this find You well. You're welcome!! I took a closer look at the Volvo Vadis 960 window lift diagram. I think the filler strip - in a single piece - goes into the lift rail.

I can't see any need for rivets, unless you detach the motor from the regulator. There's no reason to do that.

The auto glass specialists should be able easily to seat the glass for You.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

hey spook, i took the motor and regulator out as one piece and it was 4 rivets securing it. Same sized rivets that hold my interior handle on as well. I believe all later 960/s90 used this method based on my research here on the brickboard. i'd send you a picture but I cant seem to figure this image library out.

Dear p700walk,

May this find you well. I meant to write, "I'd NOT try to tap on the glass. ..."

To repeat: You can try to press the glass into the lift rail - into which the "filler strip" has been insererted - using your hands. I would NOT try to tap on the glass to seat it.

I regret my error and hope it has not led to any damage, especially to You!!

Yours faithfully,

Spook

no, no worries the message I took away from your post was

"Rather, I'd go to an auto glass repair shop, and let them do it. A replacement window is about $115.00 (dealer price)".
