I had an 89 do this to me twice in two different sets of fits. The first was the ignition switch, replacement solved it for a year (yes, the ignition switch was smoked). The second cause was that dang remote starter button connector on the driver side of the firewall, it has a black plastic shroud around it with a female spade lug connector in it. The connector had corroded and allowed the two wires that were crimped into it to lose contact from one another, note, this is an incredibly rare failure.
My money is on the ignition switch.
