I also use a strap wrench with an inner liner of rubber (to better grasp the filter); it also has a handle that swivels sideways, so the handle doesn't have to be perfectly in line with the loop.
But the main improvement, that really made my filter changes easy, is to remove the sheet metal comprising the heater for the air filter pre-heater; or in other words, the thing that the wide aluminum air duct attaches to, to provide heated air to the air filter (which I've long ago completely blocked). Having removed the duct, I also took off the sheet metal heater (it's in two parts). Now oil filter changes are easy.
