I have an '84 240 turbo which is very limited in space around the oil filter. The first time I changed the filter it was apparent that the previous owner overtightened it. I ended up using a bicycle inner-tube cut down the length so that I had a long flat piece of rubber. I just wrapped the rubber around the filter a couple of times on top of itself and gave the end a pull. It came right off with no filter shape distortion and no scraped knuckles!
Make sure you wrap it in the correct direction or you'll will make the filter tighter!
