change all fluids (oil, diff lube, coolant, brakes, gearbox). Clean all electrical grounds. Clean all fuses and fuseholders in the fusebox (and buy some spare fuses to keep in the glove box). Resolder the fuel pump relay. lubricate your door hinges and hood hinges. And consider getting a new full-size spare tire (18 year old emergency spares are not exactly trustworthy).
Buy the repair manual from Bentley. Haynes is OK, Chilton is useless. Read the 700/900 FAQ on this site, lots of the stuff there (engine, transmission, troubleshooting, fuel injection and ignition, etc.) applies to the 240.
Dan's suggestion of getting a spare Air Mass Meter and spare ECU (fuel system computer) is good as a long-term goal. Hopefully you have a junkyard nearby, and can buy used. You need to figure out if your car's fuel injection system is Bosch LH2.4 or LH3.1 -- if the VIN starts out YV1AS88 then you are 2.4, if it starts out YV1AS82, then you are LH 3.1. No sense in buying the wrong spare parts.
