M41 swap 1800 71

My problem is similar to one that I have been reading about but different enuf to start a new thread.

I am putting my '71E back together after a 1.5 year long Rebuild. The tranny was taken to my buddy's transmission shop, stripped down and pronounced unrebuildable. So... they found me another to use ase my "core" ...an M41 from a 71 142....Great, I thought! but now that I have everything rebuilt and back in...the flanges are not the same diameter (the 1800E's is larger )....

AND the D/Shaft is not reaching the rear flange of the o/d by a good 3/4".

I assume I have to get the rear flange from an M41 out of a 1800...

Unfortunately mine got scrapped, inadvertantly.

Is this going to fix the length problem too?

Does anyone know where I can get one?

Thanks

Bill

Re: M41 swap 1800 71

Are you sure this guy is your buddy?

I have a hard time imagining that an M41 would be unrebuildable,

or that it would even be in serious need of rebuilding, unless it

was terribly abused.

There is something pretty fishy about the whole deal.

Is this the original front driveshaft? You can't get 3/4" out of the

slip joint?

If the tranny in fact did come from a 142, it would be an M41, since

M410s were only used in 164s (normal bellhousing) and 1800s (small

bellhousing to fit 4 cylinder engine). One way to verify is that

the bolts holding the tranny to the bellhousing on the M41 go from

the side of the tranny through bolt holes in ears on the tranny case

into the bellhousing. On the M410 the bellhousing is the tranny front

cover and it bolts on from inside the bellhousing into the tranny.

You may have to visit a salvage to find the flange to put on the

back of the tranny to fit your driveshaft. Be sure and measure the

flange before you go and take a ruler, tapemeasure, etc with you,

so you are sure to get the right one.

Hi George...It was a M41 1800 71

based on that info, Both trannys were M41s.

THe one that came with the car had leaked for years...The PO said he had to put oil in 'all the time'...Well, we aall know how much fun that is and how convenient...in any case the trans must have been run dry many times, I salvaged the switches, the reaset top and the o/d but the rest was 'recycled'.

Unless I am all confused the slip joint only allows for and aft movement between the center carrier and the rearend, not between the carrier and the ujoint at the front. ???

I loosened all the bolts from the motor mounts on back to the center bearing bolts and there is still a gap !!! ???

Sure it's an M41? 1800 71

Some 1800s of the early '70's had M410's instead of M41's.

You sure you didn't start with an M410?

Not sure it's an M41... 1800 71

I don't have thae original trans any more...

I guess I could have had a M410...I am not sure I can tell them apart.

Can you tell me?

But does it matter? Did the M410 use a shorter front drive shaft or have a shorter flange?

I have already sunk more than $500into this tranny and o/d, so I need to make this one work.

Re: Not sure it's an M41... 1800 71

If your car is an 1800E, it will have had an M410. No version of the P1800, other than the E used the M410

However the J type OVERDRIVE used on an M410, or an M41 is identical. There were two sizes of flange, big and small.

The first thing you need to determine is whether the overdrive you now have is a J type, as fitted to the M410 or a D type as fitted to the earlier P1800 and Amazon. There is no such thing as a big D type flange

On a D type the actuating solenoid is held o the right of the overdive by two small screws.

On a J type it has a thread in the solenoid itself, and is on the left.

If you have a J type, then the bigger flange is splined the same as the smaller one. t is also a bit deeper.

If you have ended up with a D the whole lot is physically shorter, and you will need to either swap prop shafts, or sourse the appropriate gearbox.

Where can I get a 95mm rear o/d flange? 1800 71

Looks slike all I need is the flange...? I just took a measurement and the 'J' typeO/D that I have has a 85mm flange and the d/s has a 95mm flange.

Where can I get a 95mm rear o/d flange?

Re: Where can I get a 95mm rear o/d flange? 1800 71

Isn't there one on the old overdrive. The larger flange was used on injection cars, so 1800E, ES, 140 injection, some early 140's

think it is still a good part number, last time I bought one from Volvo it was about 75 pounds sterling, 115 Dollars or so.

I'll buy it new if I have to, but... 1800 71

I would rather find it for a more reasonable amount of money. BUT, if I don't turn up anything soon I will be calling the dealer.

The whole problem stems from NOT HAVING the old o/d anymore.

regards

Bill
