All,

My odometer has stoped turning, unable to click over to 125,000. The spedo is still working fine. I have tried all the usual level seven solutions, beating on the dash with my fist, punching the trip reset ect...nothing works. My Volvo Guy says he just put a new odometer in for a guy, $500 for the part. Ouch. What do you guys think, is there hope for the thing, a broken tooth in a gear? Something slipping?

Mak

Thank you one and all. 200

Gents,

Thanks for the info, I will repair it myself now that I know where to look. I am proud of the high mileage my machines rack up and would like to see this one roll over a few more times.

I just had the gear in mine replaced by an independent Volvo shop for about $150.00.

I did not have time to do it myself.

If you are located in the Dallas area go see Southwest Auto. They have treated me fairly over the years.

Go to the site mentioned in another response that lists the gear for $25. My 89 240 odom stopped working a couple of months ago. Ordered the gear, did a little research on the internet (lots of good links on the gear dude's site), and in less than 2 hours, I had mine working again. If you've pulled the instrument cluster before, and are somewhat careful, the repair should be a breeze. good luck.

What year?? The mechanical speedometers have a gear that cracks and can usually be repaired; the electric speedometers have a gear that breaks a tooth off and needs to be replaced.

At 125,000 you are probably driving a later model 240 with an electrical speedometer. The gear with the broken tooth is available from Jeff Caplan for about $25 + shipping. Go to http://www.odometergears.com/

Well, my '77 is stuck around 125,000 as well. It's just been stuck for a long time. I don't really care. It's not worth the time to repair to me. (Every once and a while it comes to life for a couple of miles...)

My advice, don't Zero the trip counter when the car is moving. Better yet, don't zero it out at all.

This is of course after you make the repair, if you choose to do so.

The odometer in my '80 has gone up to 415,000 though, and it's still working! Who could have guessed.

Whatever you do, I say fix it yourself or find a place that will do it for less than 500 bucks. The odometer in my 81 was stopped at 118,000 when I got it 8 years ago, and it still is. Not a week goes by that I don't wonder where she's really at- somewhere around 250 is all I can figure, but I've been saying that for a few years now.

The FAQ's have a bunch of strings on this. $29.00 DIY fix, see strings for the address of the guy selling the gear.
