Okay... one last time here.

What is this flap obscuring the inspection slot on the front caliper of my 1995 940 T?

I thought logically it was some kind of weather protective flap, since it is hinged on one side and logically one would just pry it out and get on with the brake pad inspection.

HOWEVER... after 10 minutes of tugging, prying with a screwdriver and generally pushing it to the break point, it does not budge. Almost like it's spot welded. Is this connected to the caliper springs somehow?

Anyone know? This is not mentioned in Haynes, of course. Couldn't find any reference in the FAQ either.

That is an anti-rattle clip and can only be removed successfully if you have removed the caliper pins or single pin preferably the bottom pin and the caliper is lifted and the pads are removed. DO NOT attempt to remove it from the so-called inspection hole, that hole was designed more than likely to hold the anti-rattle clip in place. There are three anti-rattle clips per assembly with this caliper, they should be cleaned and lubed with brake grease when pads are replaced. Hpe this reaches you before serious damage is done to the clips.

THANKS! That's the whole reason I went to the trouble to post all this in the first place... to overcome my complete ignorance on this subject. Of course these three anti-rattle pins are not mentioned in the Haynes.

No... I haven't done any damage... just wanted to verify pads and inspect for thickness remaining.

thanks again!

Hi Peter,

I not sure what that tab was designed for, but I do know that it comes off from the inside of the caliper. Once the caliper is removed, the metal tab slides forward and down for removal.....I took mine off to paint the calipers. I put them back on when I was done, they are stainless steel...but do not seem to really serve any real purpose other than to block hole for some reason.......

Thanks... now does it flip out so the brake pads can be seen?

Otherwise it's impossible to find out what kind of pads to order and checking the remaining thickness is also not possible.

Any replies much appreciated...

PP,

I too was wondering what that tab thing is for... I also tried to pull it out but gave up after I thought it would break. Will be following this thread to see what others have to say.

Concerning knowing which pads to order. Your '95 940T with ABS brakes only has one choice of pads, check out this page in the FAQ: Brake Pad Pictures Yours should be the "REPCO 1198" style for "900 w/Girling ABS 91-on front". Not sure exactly what "REPCO" is, maybe a name brand or an industry standard. My 1994 945T has the same calipers as shown in your picture and I used this style pad. Also, if you were to visit the FCP Groton 900 Series Brake page it gives you a few name brand choices of pads with the same "Girling calipers w/ABS '91 to '97" description. I think the pad/caliper confusion was for 700 series cars in the late 80's.

Good luck with getting that tab out!

Thanks for the links... I kind of figured that would be the only correct brake pad. Just the FAQ and Haynes all say look through the inspection slot to verify pad type and remaining thickness. I would be amazed if anyone could see anything through there with that in the way.

It's good to know I'm not the only one wondering what that damn thing is!
