remote oil filter 200

Hi

I have a question concerning the installation of a remote oil filter setup. After scratching and burnig my hands everytime I try to change that thing I´ve started to thik about such an upgrade. Now I would like to know what your experiences are with souch a system. I mean Volvo has thought something about when they put the filter on that specific place...now my consideration is, if I change the location, are there any problems wich could arise because of that? Are there any risks concerning engine problems respectively engine failures with a setup like this?

Thanks for any inpit..by the way it is a 1989 245 GL.

Lots of greetings

MP

On my 245 turbo, I've just gone to using a smaller filter (one that fits Saabs, and using AMSOIL synthetic. Once a year change (not heavy mileage, since it is the third car).

The '86 240 my son now drives (248k mi) has the same remote setup I put on in 1992 at 110k. No problems. I tie-wrapped some foil around the hoses near the exhaust area.

I like removing the filter straight down with a margarine tub to catch the drips (less mess on the motor mount too). And you can prefill the filter before installation.

I agree in theory with the previous 3 posts. In practice I think there are a lot of car enthusiasts with remote filters and coolers and no problems. Consider the reliability of the power steering hose, rubber brake caliber hoses, and the numerous hydraulic fittings in a cars, commercial trucks, and aircraft. If you fell competent changing these hoses and fittings then I think you can do a job you'll be happy with. You can always change it back if you're not. The one advice I have is with the type of hose connections. While many use simple hose clamps, I would take the adapters to a hydraulic supplier and have them make up the hoses with the crimped on flare fittings. This runs about $20 per hose and they will probably last the life of even a Volvo.

Sorry - but all I can see are the negatives to this modification. You are introducing more leak points (connections) and will be running oil under pressure through hoses close to the exhaust manifold. And there will be some residual old oil left in the lines and adapters at each oil change. And it won't be a cheap project if you use quality parts.

You might consider my approach which works OK on our 3 red blocks dating back over 21 yrs. (1) Oil filter strap wrench (NAPA, etc) $3.99. (2) leather gardening gloves (ACE hardware, etc. $2.49. No burns, no scratches, no problems, especially if you let things cool down a while. Draining the pan is the only part of a change that needs to be done hot.

...and the gloves work great in the garden, too.

OTOH, I have been running a remote filter on my 245 for 17 of its 20 years, installed at the same time and in series with an accessory oil cooler. I tow a trailer in Texas heat. I do have to replace the hoses and adapter o-ring every 8-10 years (they harden and begin to leak), and I do keep a close eye on things because I did have a connection fail once, right after initial install. But for the most part, I am pleased with the service and ease of filter access. (Bought both remote- and -cooler kits from ipd back when)

Hi

Thanks for the information. That´s exactly why I´m asking here before doing something like this...I´m rather risking some scratces than rhe entire engine ;-)...I´ll try the gloves...

Thanks again and lots of greetings
