Just how tight should the oil drain plug be 200

I have a 1988 Volvo 244 DL M47 that I change my own oil on. When I change my oil I just get it snug with the wrench and then give it another half turn. Someone told me in not using a torque wrench, I'm asking for trouble. Well they got my attention! So, just how tight should the bolt be? What is your method?
Thanks and Happy bricking!

Torque wrenches are great things...when they're needed. This is not one of those situations. Definitely don't overtighten it, but figure that you're sandwiching SOFT brass in there, so it won't take a dying strain. I think what you've been doing should be fine. I might tighten mine up a bit more than that, but it shouldn't really matter that much as long as it doesn't fall out or strip the threads.

If you use a torque wrench, the Bentley manual says to torque it to 45 ft*lbs.

However, don't worry about an exact torque. Just make sure you replace the washer every time and you'll be just fine. Just tighten it until it seems tight.

Look at it this way: If you have been doing your half turn method for a while and you haven't stripped the plug yet, and you haven't been leaking any oil, I wouldn't worry about it.

I have changed my own oil for thirtyfive years, no problems. Until my last oil change. I tightened it exactly as I always did, and was driving to work one day and tha oil light came on!! My drain plug fell about 100-200 yards back. But I shut her down immediately, and it didn't hurt the engine. Still not sure why it fell out, but I have never changed out the copper washer on this car.

I know lots of people don't change the washer when they change the oil, but they only cost 50 cents, so I figure there is really no reason not to change it.

Still, what happened to you sounds like an unusual occurrence. It's a good thing you spotted the oil light quickly! That could have been a real disaster!
