I drove a 1979 244GL that I got in high school from my uncle who's mechanic at the time told him that the engine is shot.....it has 181,000 KM on it. I still have the car today, retiring it last year with over 425,000 KM on it!! She still runs like a charm, but burns a little oil...she deserves too...but the body is shot....maybe I'll restore her someday!!

I have an '89 740 GL with 250,000 miles on it. Got the car at 120,000 for $1700. That's about a penny a mile! I'd say I've spent about $2000 in repairs, mostly standard stuff. I don't think I'll ever find a deal this good again. It's really outrageous. And the car won't die.
I have had several 240s. I started with a '79. I can't remember the miles it had. I do remember the 5th wheel: the well had rusted and the spare was exposed. That car broke on the way home. I paid $300. Took some work, but it was a fine car for the year or so that I had it.
I then had an '87 240 wagon. Great engine, rusty body. I think the miles were over 200,000. That engine lives on in another car. The guy I sold it to is a convert and has been spreading the word.
I then bought an '86 240 wagon. Great engine, great body. The miles were over 200,000 as well. I sold this last fall.
A friend sold me his '86 240 wagon. The body is in great shape. The engine is getting better now that I've ironed out some problems. The tranny is ho hum. Still has me a bit nervous.
Finally, I started with a '68 140. I bought a second '73 140 and pulled the engine from it. I'm sure I posted the miles a long time ago, but I don't remember what they were. Great car. I still miss it.

1985 244 with 240,000 but getting very RUSTY in Boston
new 1991 244 with 201,000 not a sign of rust anywhere
Anybody want the '85? I'd be willing to give to you for free, by free I mean DIY help, tips, etc. Rear bushings, timing belt maybe? I just don't want it to be turned into scrap.

As I was reading through the different responses, I feel like a "real young one". I have a 1990 245-M47II and only has 185,000 miles on it. I have only owned it for 2 years though. Hopefully MANY more to put on it.

My 1990 240DL Wagon just turned 288,000 over the weekend. Looking forward to getting my 300,000 mile badge sometime around October of this year. Still runs like a champ and I think is more reliable than my wife's 2000 Ford Windstar Minivan which just had $1,700 worth of work done on it at 52,000 miles (Thank God for the extended warranty we bought!).

I was trying to calculate my mileage just yesterday. I think the paper in my headgasket is beginning to give up the ghost. No loss of power, not mixing any fluids, not running hot, but smellng coolant, and my expansion tank is pressurized...hmmm...wonder if high mileage and age will weaken the gasket. Anyhow, my speedo didn't work for many many years (yes, I own a Volvo shop...what's your point?), and it's off by at least 15% now, showing less on the odometer than is actually driven. So I figured my averages, and with my house being 37 miles from the shop, and having two teenage girls with places to go, I average 40K a year, with what the motor and trans had on it prior to her diesel to gas conversion, this puts Abbie's mileage somewhere around 730K.

Now that's a trio of VERY fine looking cars. Starting with the Volvo sickness/collecting at such a relatively young age, you could have a substantial herd of them by my age! Looks like the '80 has had a windshield replacement? Mine will need one in the future, I was trying to imagine what it would look like without the chrome strip around. My two wagons look quite different, the '80 has all the chrome including over the wheel arches and the pinstriping, while the '92 has the black trim. IMHO both look very good in their own way, but personally I do favor the chrome accents.
1980 DL Wagon, original owner a few miles shy of 190,000
1992 wagon, second owner, close to 180,000

Very good eyes Janet!
In fact I have had the windshield replaced on the '80. (Actually, my parents surprised me with a new windshield last year.)
I hadn't even thought about the old chrome strip. It totally slipped my mind until just now.
The new windshield has black rubber that seals the window to the car. While it does look slick, I do like the look of chrome on my car (notice the chrome side view mirrors on the '80). I ended up putting my old plastic mirrors on my dad's '77 244. (His came with some goofy aftermarket bolt on mirrors.)
My parents had the window replaced by MS Glass. Well, it was all great... until it started raining 7 or 8 months later...
The window leaked. Quite a bit.
With the 12 month warrantee, I was able to take the car back to the shop and have the seal fixed for no charge.
However, with that in mind, I would probably recommend not using MS Glass because of their first screw up. (Thanks to them, I had a set of college books that were on the passenger floor ruined... grrrr...)

MS Glass don't sound any worse than the job Gothenburg did on the wagons, both mine needed rust repair in the rear quarter windowsills.

Well, I need to get another front back on the '76 before I do such a thing... Heh heh heh...
Actually, I picked up most of the stuff I needed from the IPD garage sale. Just gotta find the time for it...

240 DL wagon owner, so far I'm at 205,000 and no problems. I had the good fortune to get a car that has had EVERY oil change and needed maintenance done almost regliously (they even gave me all the record to prove this... a 2 in. thick file!) One thing I will say about the 240.. it seems to have a very finicky steering system (only speaking from personal experience w/ three similar models)... either they're out of alignment or just plain not driving straight most of the time. I still love it though!
