tranny oil questions 140-160 1972

So here is my first string of questions about our new car "Isabella." I remember hearing about a brand of oil that does wonders for high millage, noisy M40's. Was that a Redline product? If so which one? Synthetic?
AND
Is it the 160 motor mounts that are a direct fit for a tranny mount on the 140's? I think my tranny mount is shot by the excessive movement of the stick under acceleration.

Thanks everyone!!

My only experience with the redline 80/90 replacement has been terrible. After changing over to it in my used m41 it started slipping out of gear on decel after 100 mi of a 4000 mi trip to wis. It then started to leak out of the old rear seal. After accomplishing a virtual change of fluid due to said leak it reverted to normal opperation. I took the tranny back & got another used one , but am reluctant to try it again as holding the car in 4th gear is a real PITA. I thought maybe the synchros needed the "non-slippery" fluid to operate properly, but it may be just worn synchros. Anyone able to confirm or deny this? A Seattle Volvo tranny specialist says " ONLY use 30w motor oil in the transmission!!!" for what that's worth

I use 164 motor mounts for M41 trannys. Should be good in a M40.

For engine mounts the 160 version last longer because it is designed to take a larger load. Don't think there is any difference in transmission mounts, but I'm not 100% sure about that. Remembered about the engine mount just a week after ordering 144 replacements, bummer... Will have to wait another 34 years before replacing them!

If the gearbox is that noisy, it might be better to rebuild it now before more damage occurs instead of covering up the noise with a different lubricant.

Layshaft bearings are usually the first to go which cause the layshaft to be misaligned with the mainshaft.

Premature wear of the mainshaft is then soon to follow.

I'm running Redline sythetic in my M410, and it did nothing for noise, but it smoothed out the shifting considerably.

Which Redline product are you using with the OD? I've been threatening to do this as I cannot see a reason why synthetic would be bad for the OD unit (bulls**t penalty on the "too slippery" argument).

STP is known to quiet transmissions but it is not any kind of "fix."

Some trannys cannot be rebuilt (no bearings being manufactured anymore) so running it until it dies may be your only option. Try to get the serial number off it an look into replacement parts (especially the layshaft, laygear, laygera/shaft rollers and thrust washers). If they are available, then by all means rebuild it (it's easy).

What Redline oil did you use? I've put some Redline MTL in my last m40 for a while... I didn't really notice much difference, the noise might have even gotten worse, but the transmission felt smoother i guess you could say... Maybe less friction ish... The MTL is their lighter fluid, there is another heavier oil too that they carry... The MTL is supposedly for 80/90 replacement, which is what I normally use in my tranny.. So FWIW, that's my experience with it. Let us know what you do and how it turns out!
