How to roll forward the odometer 200 1982

I picked up a speedo unit on ebay and I would like to roll it forward to match my current mileage. I think I have figured out how to do this, but before I start taking things apart I would like to get others thoughts on the most effective way .

Thanks in advance,

Matt

Why not just replace the circuit board and possibly the odometer gear on your original speedo. You might have to twist the speedo needle off and reinstall it, but this should be a lot easier than tampering with the gears. Of course, I'm not exactly sure what the problem was with your original, but unless it's totally shot, you should be able to swap components.

THE EASY WAY! 200 1982

Matt,

since you have the old cable driven type of speedo in your '82,
take a power screwdriver and put the tip of it into the back of the speedo and press go!

this will turn them as if it was in the car. then you don't have to pull stuff apart to turn the gears and risk damaging anything. it may take a while depending on how many miles you have to go, but it is easier.

good luck

A Related Point Of Interest Here : At least on an '86 and an '88 there is a plastic retaining clip which holds a wiring harness to the rear of speedo. Actually Harness would plug in and stay put without it. Original from factory is Blue Colored whereas a replacement is White Colored. When removing this retaining clip you pretty much can't get it off without breaking it off. The whole point here being that if you find a blue retaining clip you know speedo has not been altered and is original whereas if you find a white clip speedo has been taken out. In this case I admire your honesty in trying to get replacement speedo to match actual car mileage. Very Best To All for Maximum Mileage Out Of Our Volvos.

I did the same thing (purchased a used speedometer on ebay) and wanted to roll mileage forward. I was able to do it by using a flat head screwdriver to turn the gears that are on top of the odometer which would in turn roll the number on the odometer forward that it was connected to. I had to play around with it a little to get everything to line up just right. Everything worked fine for me but there might be a possibility this method would cause something to break.

There is a gearset in the speedo that controls the rolling over of each digit. I drove out the pin holding these gears in place, which allows the individual digits to spin freely. Place the numbers where you want them, then reinstall the gearset.

thats what I thought... no importance on the relation of said gearset to itself... to the speedo digits??

Thanks

Correct - the gearset itself is keyed from one gear to the next, but not to the mileage readout digits.

Hello,

I've done it 2 ways myself. Complete disassembly. It's not that bad to put back together and there is little chance you'll break something. You can also moove the gears forward with a small pick. There is a greater chance you'll break something, so I wouldn't try that one.
