Stinky emissions 140-160 1972

I need some schooling on carburetor-fueled engines since I'm used to my 1984 244 with LH injection.

My "new" 142 with a Weber carb has strong-smelling emissions. It reminds me of how fuel-injected cars smell when running cold until the cat converter heats up. Other than leaning out the mixture, is there anything that can be done to get "cleaner" emissions from a carbed car? I love driving my 142 and the simplicity of what's under the hood, but I feel badly about the low gas mileage (low 20s) and higher pollution contributions.
