Stinky emissions 140-160 1972

There will be a significant difference between your '72 and the '84.
Hydrocarbon (what you smell (unburned fuel)) and carbon monoxide (odorless) standards in '72 were something like 600 ppm and 6.0%. By '86 (I don't know what '84 was) they were around 170 ppm & 1.1%. So you can't really compare the exhaust odor.

For the most part, you will find carburetted cars smellyer. It's the nature of the beast. The fuel just is not metered as closely with carbs vs. fuel injection. Even with a properly set up carb., you will still get some fuel odor.

SU carbs have been very reliable for me. Simple, easy to tune etc. Tried Strombergs, but had bad luck with them. Webber? Never had one.

Bottom line? Maybe your Webber isn't set up properly for your engine, but I'll bet that even if it is set up perfectly, you will still get some odor.
