544 Windshield Removal 444-544

Maaco put fresh paint on my 544. I also had them replace the windshield and rear window seals. Although the paint looks quite nice, the window trim was not installed when I came to pick up the car. They claimed that a "special" tool is required to install the trim.

I later found out that the previously small storm water leaks in the bottom corners of the windshield were now substantial leaks.

I took the car to a known reliable body shop and they took a look at the situation. They said sure they can install the trim but the window has to come out and the trim goes on as one assembly. Furthermore, they showed me that Maaco had not addressed any of the rust along the body flange of the windshield or rear window. Nor did they apply any sealant when installing the glass.

Maaco gave me back the $150 they charged for the window installation and said they would respray the car if I had someone else do the glass work.

The swedish classics article on Windshield replacement got me to thinking that I could do the removal and repair and just let Maaco respray. The one part of the article that bothered me was having to cut out the brand new seal to get the glass out.

Is there a way to get the glass out without cutting the seals or taking a saws all to the body?

Thanks

Joe in WV
