prepump filter, carburated, 140-160

Where do you guys put a fuel filter before the mech. fuel pump on carburated cars? My car doesn't have enough room for one between the pump and the hard line to fit one... And i think that hard line runs the rest of the way back to the tank... Any thoughts? I think someone has said before that they just shortened the hard line... But how did they do that? A hacksaw (or whatever the tiny bladed saws are called)? Also, about the fuel line itself, i picked up at the junkyard some extra line what i thought to be fuel line, but it doesn't seem to be reinforced like the stuff my car currently has. It was from a 240 if i remember correctly, and has a thin blue stripe on it. Is this suitable fuel line? I mean i'm not running high pressure or any thing... Lemme know what you all think, thanks!

Kyle-not driving or painting parts of it, but sorting through my junk deciding what to bring to the GS, and playing with my fuel filters and locations...
