Replace plastic trim around automatic shift lever 200 1983

We were removing the carpet from the front seat of the 1983 240 GL. We loosened the plastic trim around the automatic shift lever between the driver and passenger, but of course it wouldn't come off over the handle with the OD switch. Parts of it broke.

I found a replacement, I think. But to replace it, I'll need to remove the handle from the shift lever. How do I do that? Or is there some other way?
