I'm even lazier -- I just made a cut with a hacksaw through the front edge of the plastic trim piece and by giving a bit of a twist, it will slide around the metal rod. Once it's screwed back in place, the cut is barely noticeable. Not show-car quality, but it works well enough for me ...
