As you see, it's a do-able thing. One which I have managed to avoid to date.

When removing carpets I have been able to manipulate the hole in the carpet such that removal of the plastic trim was not necessary. The trim, as I recall, was loosened, lifted, and turned sideways to fit it through the hole.
