I read this somewhere and it works well for me. I am lazy.

Use a screwdriver to pry off the shift release button on top of the shifter. It is spring loaded so watch out. I keep one hand over the button so I don't loose the parts.

After the button and spring are out you can see the 2 wires to the overdrive button and the back of the button itself. I push out the button from the inside.

Move the shifter into 1st or second, (to improve pulling angle).

Grab the shift knob firmly with both hands and pull up hard. Knob should come off. If it does not I place an open end wrench under the knob and hit the wrench with a hammer. Only had to use a hammer once.

The plastic acrome piece that covers the shaft is now exposed. I would leave it alone. It is fragile.

The shift cover is held down with two screws. Take those out and lift cover gently past the shaft cover and you are done.

Reverse for assembly.
