Engine backfires when throttle blipped 120-130

Hey all,

So close to on the road again... Car began behaving _really_ badly and fuel economy took a nosedive, to I figured it was time for a proper tuneup. Here's the short version:

New plugs, new cap, rotor, condensor, points. Old ones were obviously toasted. Lashed the valves to 0.018, breaking an adjuster screw as mentioned in another post. Replaced the adjuster and started over, relashing the valves to 0.019 this time to see if that helped with the backfire problem I noticed when the throttle was blipped. That didn't do it so I reset everything on the carbs. No dice.

It still bogs down and backfires under heavy throttle. Plug wires are on the correct plugs (1, 3, 4, 2 going clockwise on the cap), timimg light on the #1 wire shows the mark on the crank pully lining up with the pointer on the block at 1500 rpm. No vacuum line on the distributor and the timing light shows advance under higher rpms.

I'm at wit's end here and can't figure out what the problem is. I'm going to go try lashing the valves to 0.025 to see if that fixes the backfiring (this was the first time I lashed the valves since getting the car, and they were really wide to start with), but deep down I know that's not the right answer.

Any help or insight appreciated.

Thanks,

-aric.
