Symptoms sound immediately like lean backfire... so the first and easiest thing I would check is for adequite dashpot oil...remove air filters and push up dashpots...these should be damped...if not, oil is low...add dashpot oil...if dashopts are not damped and come up too fast (and no enrichening is taking place), mixture goes lean, possibly explaining backfire...
