I have to ask about this one.

You can still have hot air: just reconnect the stove pipe, make sure the valve works, and use aluminum HVAC tape (Home Depot) on the flapper holes. If he drilled holes in the air box, fill them with silicone or cover with aluminum tape.

I am a believer in preheaters in winter areas: they do improve warmup and fuel economy. You just have to make sure the thermostatic valve works, most effectively through replacement.
