Jeff. I have to disagree with you about the fiber gear being "inferior". Actually they tend to last a long time. My 66 122 still has the original gear in it. Mileage is 165k. Granted it hasn't been driven much for the last 12 years but the original gear is going on 40 years old. Hardly inferior IMO.
In contrast most timing belts only last 60k miles and timing chains usually only go about 125k miles before they get too worn out to work properly.I believe they went with fiber because of the noise factor, quieter than steel gears.
Jim Clark was an incredible driver no doubt. But I'll bet the gear still would have failed even had he been driving your car.
