Enough, Fiber? 120-130 1967

Age may indeed be a factor. Still, anything mechanical that lasts 40 years isn't exactly junk.

I'd speculate that a fiber gear is much cheaper and easier to manufacture than a metal gear (compare the price even today). It's probably molded rather than machined. Machining gear teeth is a very picky operation, and great accuracy is required. The reject rate on the fiber gears would likely be much lower.
