Went to Pick a Part and found a redone head in a nice wreck. The valves and ports were clean almost shiny. Someone did nice work on it. $125. Went home and checked it out. The valves were very good and nicely seated, valve stems minimal buildup- this was a fine head. I bored and honed the port passages to effect a better air flow- all the raised edges I tried to smooth and make the transitions slipperier. After install the 1985 Turbo sure breathes and revs very easily. I'm glad I did it. Changed the timing belt and pulley while at it and a couple of hoses. Runs pretty jippety now and am pleased. Not sure if the head polishing helped but it sure seems to breathe and respond quicker. Don't be afeared. Get in there and redo the head or buy a used one. There are plenty of good heads out there destined for the scrap heap so probe a little and find a good one. (The scrap heap will waste it by selling it to China for a couple of pennies per pound.) I did (from a 88 Bertone someone had refurbished and then got sidebonked and rearended) and it worked out good and inexpensively. These 740 cars are the greatest to find parts and work on and the turbo is still very satisfying to drive- I have two with sticks. Good luck- have fun learning.
