Doh! Brakelights are gone now

Sure sounds like the bulb failure relay. I bet if you have cruise control it is not working either.

Remove the cover from the relay and examine with a strong light and magnifying glass. You are looking for a bad solder joint. It might look burned or perhaps just discolored with a faint cirle. Usually resolder will bring it back. They are very, very expensive new.
