What I should have done was use a spare relay plug, wire it for 12v and then check the resistance on the appropriate pins in the energized and non-energized position.

But it is dark and cold tonight.

So what I did do was take the relay indoors, pry its cover off and use the multimeter's Rx1 scale across the contacts while manually moving the relay arm (there is only one coil and arm -- carrying two contacts -- on that vintage relay).

Takes three hands to do that, of course.
