1967 122 sedan, with Girling rear drum brakes--
That little "cross bar thingy" really confused me too. I just replaced both rear brake cylinders, and the 2 E brake bars I had were identical!! The same bar for both sides, so one of them had to be installed the reverse from the other one. I went into my big box of spare drume brake hardware, and found 2 more bars, but they were also the same as the first 2! So now I had 4 bars, all the same.
Are there even 2 sides to the bars, one different bar for each side? How are they mounted, which way does the curved part face? That the center part of the bar is bowed slightly outward is obvious, and that part is closer to the drum, but the end is curved up(or down). All of my manuals were deficient on this question, both the factory workshop manuals, and the Haynes. I should have this one down cold, given my 25+ years with old Swedish tin, but some days I just seem to wake up stupid! Thanx for the patience (patients?)
