M46 wagon shifting problem 700 1991

Try pulling up the reverse detent collar on the lever as if you were going to shift into reverse. Now does it enter the 1st-2nd slot easily? If so, I'd bet on the reverse detent plate on the shifter bracket being out of adjustment.

You can remove the 4 plastic plugs, lift the rubber gear lever boot and see the plate quite plainly. Slacken the two 10mm bolts and adjust so that 1st/2nd are easy to access, but it won't go into the reverse slot without lifting the detent collar.

When you have the boot up, you'll see how it all works.
