My M46 (from a 90, now in an 88) has a front U-joint, not a flex disc. This makes the pin a lot easier to get to.

The plastic bushings on the pin are worth looking into as well. If they fail, the shifter would feel noticeably sloppy side-to-side. The reverse lock-out is also a possibility.
