02 sensor question S90-V90

I can accept being told that I was fed crap information BUT only if you could tell me why my car ran rich and 12 miles to the gallon with only the rear sensor gone. It was replaced and ran fine afterwards. The front sensor was then replaced only as then the cat and both sensors were all new and I thought I would get another 100,000 from them before replacement. All this happened at around 107,000 miles.
