From your description of the wiring to your cluster, there should be three more connections. There as a wire with a clear plastic plug that connects directly to speedometer, and a orange wire and a blue wire (I think these colours are correct)that connect to a pair of brass connectors on the cluster circuit board.
Have you tried a different clock wiring harness? There is really only one way to connect the clock as each of the three terminals have a unique width. The clock is grounded through this cable.
Is this a pre-89 or post-89 cluster?
