I was in the same position earlier this summer when my windshield started to leak like a sieve (had windshield washer fluid in the car when trying to clean off a few bugs!). I have a new windshield, but don't want to put it in until I get the car painted...so I decided to seal the old one. I cleaned out the old channel really well and used Loctite Flowable Silicone (the one for windshields that wicks - it very fluid), so far nothing has leaked.
