DEWFPO,
Thanks for the detailed response. All your questions are good questions. Here are the best answers that I can provide.
Has your mechanic pulled any codes? I do not know if he pulled codes. He just reported to me that the 100 amp alternator never produced above 38 amps and replaced the alternator on that basis. Of course, when I picked it up from the shop, everything functioned flawlessly.
Did he check all the battery connections for corrosion? I do not know, before taking the car to him, I double checked the connections at the battery and actually thought that had solved the problem at one time.
Did he check the alternator BEFORE replacing the battery? I doubt that this happened. I was trying to keep my first post short and out of respect for the readers I left out the fact that my wife was out of town and my brother-in-law took the car to "some place" that checked the battery. I appreciated my brothe-in-law's efforts but have no idea what happeded prior to the battery replacement. He was informed that it needed to be replaced but even after the replacement, the car had to be jumped the next day prior to my wife driving home. I will try to check for corrosion because some things just do not add up. It seems that the trasn code, the "limp" home mode, the necessary jumps assist starts and the low alternator readings don't all add up logically.
I will look for the PNP sensor replacement procedure.
Thanks,
MArk
