Hi Mark,

Sounds to me like neither of these mechanics are familiar with common 960/S/V90 problems. If you came to me (I'm no mechanic, just a 960 owner) and told me the symptoms, I'd tell you the car likely needed a new PNP switch on the transmission. When it failed on my 960, it sometimes wouldn't start without moving the shifter, the transmission mode lights would flash and the arrow on the dash would be on. Also, the car would get stuck in winter mode (3rd gear). It's a common problem on these cars and has nothing to do with the alt or battery. My guess is that both were fine and the PNP is the problem. Good luck with solving the problem and let us know the outcome.
