side draft carbs 1800

Here's my grungy setup on the PV:

DCOE 40's with 36mm chokes. I got them (missing a few jets and with 32mm chokes) with manifold and linkage bits on eBay for around $350 shipped. A previous incarnation of the motor that didn't breathe quite as well (stock F head on top of 2.1 liter bottom end, IPD Street Perf cam, headers & 2.25 exhaust) couldn't use the 36mm chokes, seemed like too much carb and it would stumble badly unless the throttle was very carefully and sedately pressed down. When I put the R-sport head on along with an Isky VV81 cam I tried them again and now they work wonderfully.

Still, a few people keep saying I'd get a bit more power with some 45's. Maybe I'll try at some point. 36mm chokes are the largest they sell for the 40's. Avoid the 42's, in case you run across the pair. Apparently there are very few choke sizes available, cramping your tuning options.

I had some re-needled SU carbs on it prior, using needles from Rhys to suit the motor. They worked perfectly fine, no hint of any problems. But the improvement in throttle response and power (especially up near the redline) was really nice. SU's always have to take a moment to reflect on the fact that you just floored the gas pedal, but the Weber's just immediately roar into full power. And they make better sounds too, at some RPM's the carbs are roaring louder than the exhaust (which is no small feat given my exhaust system puts some harley's to shame).
