When I bought my 97 960, I had the same problem. I took the cheapest, and fastest way out, and have yet to have the problem again. 11 months, and running.
All I did, was flush the old tranny fluid. However, completed it while the car was running went thru the gears, to get the older fluid out of all hiding places (especially from R to N to D, and back). As I flush the old, and began putting in new fluid, it was immediately smoothing out. I had to flush it again, after about 1000 miles. This time, I changed over to synthetic. New fluid works wonders.
I think I have previous post on this, but its been quite a while since I've been on the board.
