From what I have read it could be that, but is most likely the micro switch.
I was able to get the plastic "wood" from around the shifter off without any issues. If you start at the rear of the plastic piece and push forward it should come off with out too much trouble. CAREFUL OF THE WIRES!!!! They are not that long and if you try to pull up too far they can break. They are the wires to the shift indicator position light. Anyway, you can see the micro switch at the top of the shift path, on the right. There are two wires going to it. Cut the wires going to the micro-switch twist them together, and you have bypassed the switch and go merrily on your way. They are two wires that come across the top of the shift path to the switch. there is a third that goes down into the car. I did not mess with that one. Look on the FCP Groton website at the picture of the micoswitch...the wires to be cut will be self evident after looking at the picture.
