My PV had a bracket that bolted under the transmission mount at the rear of the transmission. It reached over a few inches where a muffler clamp attached it to the exhaust pipe for support. It probably takes quite a bit of stress off the downpipe where it attaches to the manifold. When the motor rocks and vibrates back and forth, it otherwise has to try and wiggle the exhaust system through that downpipe connection, and that's a lot of mass to shake around on a long lever.
