Unlikely with a car as new as an '88 (ho ho ho), but you should also check both ends of the big red cable which takes the alternator output. Particularly at the alternator end (more heat, I'd guess), the crimped connection between the cable strands and the ring fitting on the end gets loose, and intermittent electrically. With the car running at night, and lights off, wiggle the cable; if you see any sparking, the connection's toast. Replacing the cable's the easy fix.
