Sorry. that was a typo on my part. The range was actually 88 to 104. In the UK in the 70s the FM radios typically went to either 102 or 104. The police and fire services were using sections of the band from 100 upwards which made things difficult for broadcasters. Commercial channels gradually filled in the gaps until the public services moved out completely in the late 90s. Elsewhere in the World the full band to 108 was used. Japanese radios of the time could often be tuned through the full range regardless of where they were sold. If you have a search around for pictures of old car radios you'll see how the range varies. I have just taken a mono Blaupunkt Frankfurt out of a car which goes from 88 to 104.
